Winters in Lake Tahoe tend to be hit or miss. However, when they hit, they hit hard! Although there may be days of sunshine, be prepared for massive snow storm possibilities. Be sure to have a weather capable car, whether you are renting or bringing your own.
Watch the Weather
This may be an obvious one, but if you’re pressed for time on your trip, you want to make sure you miss any snowstorm coming on the day you plan to leave to head home. Especially if you’re driving!
If there is snow forecasted the day you plan to leave, consider changing plans to leave a day early or later. The snowy season makes things much more difficult compared to the summer months! But the Tahoe area is no less of a beautiful view but a winter paradise.
Things to Do
Snowsports
Snowboarding, skiing, tubing
This is probably the most obvious one, as Lake Tahoe is the perfect place for winter sports enthusiasts. There is something for everyone, whether it is your first time or your hundredth time, there is something for you in these outdoor activities.
Lake Tahoe is known for its world-class ski resorts. Some of the best resorts are Heavenly Mountain Resort, Kirkwood Mountain Resort, and Sierra-at-Tahoe. Kirkwood is for more hardcore skiers, while the other two are more novice-friendly. If you’re a beginner or interested in tubing or other sports, Sierra-at-Tahoe is probably your best option.
There is also cross-country skiing, sledding, and snowshoeing available. Winter is ski season – the perfect place for a great workout and unforgettable winter experience.
However, if you’re not into snowsports – there’s still plenty to do during winter in Lake Tahoe!
Soak in Hot Springs
Soak in the same Hot Springs as Mark Twain did back in the 1880s! There is truly nothing more relaxing than a nice soak surrounded by the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains.
There are several different hot springs in the area but we recommend checking out David Walley’s Hot Springs for the history. You can either stay at the resort or make a reservation to use the springs for the day. There is also a spa on site including a sauna and steam room.
Grab a Drink
Whether you’re a day or night drinker, Lake Tahoe has plenty of fun options for you. Caffeinate yourself at Drink Coffee Do Stuff or grab breakfast at Free Bird Cafe.
Once you’re energized for the day, spend time exploring the South Tahoe Beer Trail. Several awesome breweries and restaurants are featured along this trail. Check out the map here.
Crazy Good Bakery & Cafe is also worth mentioning for its crazy good desserts. This place is a must-visit if you have a sweet tooth! Feast on freshly-baked muffins, pies, scones, bagels, sandwiches, and more.
There are some great local places to explore downtown. Check out mini golf, axe throwing, arcades, see a movie, etc.
Take a Helicopter Tour
For an unforgettable view of the area, check out one of many helicopter tours available in the area. Pick from aerial views of Emerald Bay, Zephyr Cove, or Sand Harbor. They also offer Sunset trips, Lake and Waterfall tours, and a 45-minute ride circling the lake.
This is a must-do if you’re a photographer or if you want to have a unique experience on your trip.

Go on a Snowmobile Ride
Riding a snowmobile is a thrilling experience to be had at Lake Tahoe. There are several different companies offering tours, but one of our favorites is Zephyr Cove. This beautiful 2 hour tour offers scenic views as well as everything you need to suit up for your adventure.
If you’ve never driven a snowmobile before, their staff will teach you! There is also time allotted to stop for photos. For more information, head on over to their website here.
Ride the Tram
The ride lasts 10 minutes, soaring to Palisades Tahoe’s High Camp, which is over 8,000 feet above sea level. At High Camp you can find restaurants, museums, displays, and of course, incredible views!
